- First of all tell us a little about yourself
My name is Phil and I’ve been watching Saints since 1993 and have had a season ticket since 1996. My Mum and Dad got me into rugby in the 1st place along with my cousin’s, Auntie and Uncle. My 1st game was against Leeds in 1993, the week before Kevin Ward broke his leg at Wigan, and we won 42-8.
I was lucky to be a Saints mascot when I was 8 years old in a game against Featherstone in 1994!
I’ve been very lucky to support Saints through the good and bad, although mainly good. When I 1st started attending we were in the shadow of Wigan but from 1996 things changed and it’s fair to say we had a brilliant golden period of over 10 years of success winning everything and seeing some of the greatest players to ever play for this club. It was also during my teens and early 20s so I was very lucky to witness that period of success during that age.
For about 10 years during my late teens and early 20s I went to pretty much every game home and away including several trips to Catalans. Nowadays I still have a season ticket but very rarely attend away games which is partly two reasons – one I fell out of love with going to games during the KC era and two the cost. I stuck with my season ticket during the KC era and I’m glad I did despite the toxic atmosphere at the club, but away games I just got out of the habit of going to. I still watch on the box and if it’s a local away game and I’ve got the money I will try and attend but the likes of Catalans etc are just too expensive now when you have a mortgage and have a season ticket for a football team too.
- Sum up last season (pretty much a blank canvas to give your thoughts. Can include anything: your favourite moment during the season, who you thought was the best player, biggest surprise etc. – whatever you want)
Last season was a great season for the club. We dominated from start to finish and probably for the 1st time since 2006, you felt we were by far the best side and had great players.
Since Holbrook joined the club I’ve probably enjoyed watching Saints more than any other time apart from the Millward era. Whether we won or lost, there always seemed to be an appetite to play attacking rugby and he brought that enjoyment back to the club. To top it off with the Grand Final last year was a great achievement and thoroughly deserved.
My favourite moment of the season besides the Grand Final was the Play Off Semi against Wigan, one of the most complete performances I’ve ever seen from a Saints side. It showed how much better we are than Wigan and put them back in their box after thinking they were catching us.
The only disappointment was the Challenge Cup Final against Warrington. We’re a better team than Warrington but gave the game to them by playing poorly on the day. It was a very frustrating game and a very long journey home.
Hopefully this season we can go one better, but overall a very enjoyable and satisfying season.
- We’ve not recruited anyone from outside the club, bar the new Head Coach Kristian Woolf. Some say our squad is strong enough and there’s no point adding to it for the sake of it, some say standing still is akin to going backwards – what’s your view on us not adding to the first team squad? (Is it the right move? Should we have dipped in to the transfer market?)

(Is it the right move? Should we have dipped in to the transfer market?)
I’m a little bit torn on this. I think it’s always good to freshen up the squad and keep the rest of the squad on their toes. It would’ve been quite nice to add one player to the squad just to add a bit of extra competition.
But on the other hand there’s no obvious weakness in the squad so no obvious position to strengthen. Matty Lees will be back from injury so that strengthens us and the new coach should hopefully keep the players on their toes and will bring some new and fresh ideas to our game. Liverpool FC didn’t sign anyone this summer and it’s not affected them whatsoever so hopefully Saints will be the same and the Grand Final win will spur us on for more success.
- What is the minimum expectation that would make it a successful season overall?
Minimum expectation for me is a top two finish and a trophy. I think with this squad of players anything less would be seen as a disappointment and given we won a Grand Final last year the players know how to win big games now. I’m confident of a good cup run too but you never know what will happen with injuries and luck of the draw at that point. Style wise I’m confident we will remain an attacking side but hopeful Woolf can make subtle improvements both with and without the ball
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
Difficult one as there’s no specific position we need to improve just yet. I’d probably say Jackson Hastings to play to 7 alongside Lomax or Daryl Clark to play at hooker with Roby’s game time reducing significantly in recent years.
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
Jack Welsby. We saw glimpses of him last season but I think we’ll see alot more of him this year. He played on the wing in the trial game so I get the impression he’ll be used to cover any of our back positions when we suffer an injury or decide to rotate, and just like Lomax early in his career, will play a number of roles just to gain some first team exposure. He’s a very talented young player, I’ve got high hopes for him.
- We welcome Toronto into Super League for the first time, meaning we now have 2 teams from outside of the UK taking part in Super League.
So in three parts:
What are your thoughts on Toronto’s promotion
Would you welcome more expansion teams from across Europe and/or North America
what would your ideal ‘domestic’ Rugby League competition look like in 20-30 years (e.g. Toronto to still be part of the Super League structure with other expansion teams, all expansion teams to be in their own strong domestic leagues, UK only super League etc.)
I think it’s great for the game. I’ve no idea if they’ll be a long term success but it’s something different for Super League and gives us a bit more exposure. We’ve already seen the impact that the SBW signing has brought to the game and whether you love them or hate them, Toronto have got people talking. Surely thats only a good thing? I’m gutted I can’t afford to go to Toronto this year.
I would, providing they had the foundations in place and offered something to the competition. It’s always a risk to see how new clubs turn out, as we saw with PSG but Catalans have been a great addition to SL and are well established now. I think expanding the game and bringing in big commercial partners from around the world is crucial for the future of the sport and to do that we have to grow the competition.
I’ve not really thought about it too much but as mentioned in the previous answer the sport does need to grow in this country to keep up with other sports and attract commercial partners. It would be interesting to see a few teams from other countries forming their own league and having European and World club competitions but at the same team there is an onus on Super League and RL in the UK becoming a more sustainable sport to allow Rugby League to grow naturally so money can be invested into other nations. It’ll be interesting to see what benefits Toronto bring to SL over a number of years if they survive of course.
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
I’m a fan of the idea but can understand people being against it. Draws are very rare in Rugby League so the concept doesn’t occur often. I think I’d be more in favour if it was golden try as it seems to favour the side who gets the ball from the kick off currently.
- Predictions:
Top 5 – Saints, Wigan, Wire, Cas, Hull
Grand Finalists – Saints, Wigan
Champions – Saints
Challenge Cup Winners – Saints
Relegated – Hull KR
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
Its difficult to predict with the way the voting system is. A player at a mid table side who performs quite well could win the award which doesn’t feel right to me. Hastings deservedly won it last year but how Lomax wasn’t in the top 3 was insane. I think with the balance and quality of our squad it won’t be a Saints players as our votes will again be shared so I’m going to go with Daryl Clark, someone like that who shines regularly for Wire.
- The 2006 Saints team won BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year, and are lauded as one of the best teams we’ve had recently. So – who would have won had they faced each other – the 2006 Grand Final team or the 2019 Grand Final team?
It would be closer than people think. The Saints of 2019 had a winning habit and were very similar to the 2006 squad with how ruthless they were. Both teams were very well balanced and had power coming off the bench. I think the 2006 team would take it though. Paul Wellens, Jamie Lyon, Sean Long and Keiron Cunningham were arguably 4 of our greatest ever players so for individual talent alone would take it for me.
- Finally, quick fire!, pick your best 17 from these (and no you can’t swap any round, James Roby is exempt because he could be picked twice):
1. Wellens or Coote
2. Gardner or Makinson 3. Lyon or Naiqama 4. Talau or Percival 5. Meli or Grace 6. Pryce or Lomax 7. Long or Fages 8. Anderson or Walmsley 9. Cunningham or Smith 10. Cayless or Thompson 11. - First of all tell us a little about yourself
I am 44, married with two lads aged 9 and 7. I first went to Saints in the 1984 season to watch Mal Meninga. I can’t remember the exact game, something tells me it was against the touring Kiwis (would have to check records to see if we did play them that season) From the age of 14 when I could go on my own to approx 17 I went home and away, going to away games with older friends on the supporters coach. After this time, education, University got in the way a little and then I worked away in London for 2 years so my attendance at games was sporadic for a few years up until 2004 when I started to go all the home games again and a few aways.
For the last 15 years I have gone to nearly every home and a few aways. I purchased a Season Ticket for the first season in the new ground but shift work meant that I couldn’t make every home game so never bothered with a ST. Now that I am a regular Mon- Fri worker again I am looking into another Season Ticket with my two lads, especially the eldest who is really into Saints. However there is still the age old argument of whether or not it is worth buying one due to the offers available mid-season, that’s for another conversation I guess.
- Sum up last season
Last season was great although we could have emulated the 2006 team had we turned up at Wembley. That for me was one of the few things that Holbrook got wrong, playing players who weren’t match fit and on a hot day and a big pitch, it showed. I also feel that we looked nervous with many of the team having never played at Wembley or in a Final. We had to win the GF bearing in mind the chokers tag and I was secretly pleased we played Salford as always thought we could win. I know we spanked Wigan all season but you never know in a big game with them, they could’ve done a number on us. Holbrook learnt from the season before and rotated players well. I also feel that we were lucky with injuries and have been for a few seasons now. Not sure if that’s luck or good backroom staff.
I think we should have bought at least one player. The great Man Utd sides of the past under Fergie always had new players as Fergie said it kept players on their toes and avoided complacency. I would have loved to see us bring in a big tough Tongan back rower. Would have been great. I think we are the only team not to have recruited. Having said that, you could argue why change something that is not broken and we have a settled spine and a settled half back combination. Wigan and Warrington both have new halves that will take time to settle. The problem we have is that the young lads will no longer be on poor money. The likes of Knowles and Grace are established players now and will naturally attract higher back ended deals. We are probably right up to max on the cap especially with the likes of Makinson, Percival, Thompson, Walmsley et al.
- What is the minimum expectation that would make it a successful season overall?
Minimum expectation, top 2 and to be in one of the Finals. I think Woolf will have us tougher and aggressive in defence but hopefully still keep the same attacking way of playing.
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
Sonny Bill Williams. From a marketing point of view he may well have put 2000 on the gate every week. I also have a very good mate who is a current SL assistant coach and tells me that from talking to his players who know SBW well that if he gives it 100% he will absolutely kill it. He is a genuine superstar, looks after himself really well off the field and still has a lot to offer.
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
I’ve heard great things about Dodd however have also heard that he is suspect defensively and lacks toughness. I expect him to have bits of game time this season so I guess we will see. He also seemed to do really well on the Academy Tour of Australia so is clearly a talented lad. I also feel Lees (if he has no setbacks from his injury) and Ashworth will kick on. Woolf may be just the right coach to get the best out of Ashworth. He’s a big unit but I don’t always feel that he plays his weight. I also expect Welsby to have another good season, a very talented kid.

I’ll refrain from answering this one fully as I could spend a whole day on it. To summarise, rather than trying to be too clever we should concentrate on the heartlands and invest money into that, Cumbria being one, where there is genuine interest. We keep telling everyone that it’s the greatest game in the world yet the game is on its arse in many ways. We would be knackered without the Sky money so something is going wrong somewhere. We just can’t seem to kick on. In terms of what it will look like in 20-30 years, I have no idea. The RFL routinely change their plans.
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
I like Golden Point and the fact that there are no draws anymore. However I would like to see both sides have a set of 6 with the ball. So for example if the receiving team score with their first set in Golden Point, then let the other team have at least one set to see what they can do. If they score, then keep doing the same. It’s unfair for one side to have first go purely on winning a coin toss.
- Predictions:
Top 5 – 1st Saints 2nd Wigan 3rd Hull 4th Warrington 5th Cas
Grand Finalists – Saints v Wigan
Champions – Saints
Challenge Cup Winners – Wigan
Relegated – Hull KR. They have signed 20 players and let 12 go. That’s a huge upheaval and they have also lost the experience of Danny McGuire. Shaun Kenny-Dowall may go well (if he doesn’t get homesick and want to go home) but those numbers mean it’s going to take a lot of getting used to.
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
I don’t mind the way they are given out, probably the best way. I’ve heard that Bevan French has been flying pre-season and may be worth a bet at big odds playing full back this season. I feel Lomax is in with a good shout too and I suppose if Hastings settles, he may well win it again.
- The 2006 Saints team won BBC Sports Personality Team of the Year, and are lauded as one of the best teams we’ve had recently. So – who would have won had they faced each other – the 2006 Grand Final team or the 2019 Grand Final team? (Why do you think your choice would’ve won?)
2006 all the way. There was barely a weakness in that squad and when Fozzard and Vinnie Anderson can’t make the 17 that shows just how strong that team was. Wello, Long, KC all club legends. Jamie Lyon was one of the greatest I’ve ever seen in the Red vee and then you had the likes of Pryce, Gilmour etc who were great players too. Cayless was hugely under rated and then you had a very young Roby and an improving James Graham. Whilst the 2019 team was great, the likes of Peyroux and Amor would get nowhere near that 2006 team.
- Finally, quick fire!, pick your best 17 from these (and no you can’t swap any round, James Roby is exempt because he could be picked twice):
1. Wellens or Coote

- First of all tell us a little about yourself
My name is Stuart Tucker, I’ve been a Saints fan for 30 years, over the years I’ve been a season ticket holder at Knowsley Road, Widnes (When Saints ground shared) and Langtree Park, I follow Saints away from home also and been to Catalan a number of times as well, also been lucky enough to watch Saints win in many finals, lose plenty as well, but enough about them
- Sum up last season
To sum up last season is pretty easy…. Champions! And well deserved! After the disappointment of the previous season you could tell there was a real hunger about Saints in 2019, player recruitment was good and the coaching team installed a real grit into the teams’ attitude. Obviously Wembley was a huge disappointment, after not being there since 2008, there was a sense of relief that we had made it back but on the day there seemed a sort of arrogance from Saints fans that we only had to turn up and win. Credit to Warrington (don’t think I’ve ever said that) they got their tactics spot on and deserved the win, I genuinely think this was a real kick up the back side that we needed and made us more determined to win the Grand Final
I can see why we haven’t brought in any new players this season, if it’s not broke don’t fix it, but I also don’t want to have to rely on some of our youngsters – if we get an injury to Coote, Tommy, Jonny etc. early on in the season, are our youngsters ready to step up but not to be burned out by June or July? Hopefully during the season if things aren’t going right or we just want to strengthen then we can (I remember Vinnie Anderson joining half way through the season in 2005)
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
If I had the opportunity to bring a player to Saints from another team it would be Oliver Gildart from W***n, I genuinely think he’s a class centre, he’s quick, good pair of hands, good footwork and English, I’m not saying he’s better than Percy, I’d like them on the same team
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
Matty Lees is a player I think will hopefully make a name for himself this season, until his injury last season Matty was in the reckoning for an International call up, he’s a big player, good footwork and would run through a brick wall for his team
On a side note I think Jack Welsby could be in for a big year too, not quite sure what his ideal position is as last season he played at fullback, half back and on the wing in LMS friendly, but certainly one with a big future
- We welcome Toronto into Super League for the first time, meaning we now have 2 teams from outside of the UK taking part in Super League.
So in three parts:
What are your thoughts on Toronto’s promotion

I’m not really a fan of Toronto being in Super League, don’t get me wrong I’m all for expanding the game but we should be focusing on Cumbria, with their history and traditions I think we’ve missed something here. Saying that if Toronto takes off in Canada who knows where we could be in 5-10 years down the line
I want the game to grow, but look when Super League started in 1996, we had Paris St Germain, but after 2 years it folded, there was talk about Saints playing Salford in Valencia then that fell through. I don’t want a team formed just for marketing reasons, there has to be logistics behind it and a back-up plan in case it falls through
I would like to see the sport played all around the world in a healthy state, but I don’t think it will ever get past the M62 corridor, with the World Cup just around the corner this is the perfect time to advertise it as a whole country event
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
I personally like the Golden Point Rule, it brings excitement to the game and we are a sport that has always been innovative, the only way it could possibly be bettered is that if the game finishes a draw, each team get a point but play an extra 10 mins each half and if there is a point scored that team receives a ‘Bonus’ point
- Predictions:
Top 5 – Saints, W***n, Wire, Hull, Castleford
Grand Finalists – Saints v W***n
Champions – Saints
Challenge Cup Winners – Saints
Relegated – Huddersfield
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
Jonny Lomax my tip for Man of Steel. I agree that it should be a panel of ex-players who cast the vote but there should be specific rules about how the man of the match gets picked
Both teams are exceptional in their own right but for me the 2006 team was something else, International players in every position, the strength in depth was that good that we had to leave 2 Internationals out of the Challenge Cup Final and Grand Final

- First of all tell us a little about yourself
I started watching Saints in 1995 the Centenary year just before Super League started, an amazing time to become a Saints fan. I’ve intermittently had season tickets over the years, seen many of the Challenge Cup and Grand Finals. Now enjoying seeing my 5 year old son becoming a Saints fan, he’s started to go the games and went to his first Grand Final in 2019.
- Sum up last season
Well overall it was awesome to see Saints win the GF again, and without being arrogant, Saints would have massively underachieved if they had come away from the season with nothing. It was clearly a more stable and balanced side compared to 2018. Expectation from the previous year was so high and Holbrook really showed how he had learnt from his mistakes of 2018, in utilising his squad for the long haul and not burning out players.
Biggest surprise for me was how the addition of Coote in the side was a masterstroke, and whilst not the maverick player compared to his predecessor Ben Barba, actually worked to the advantage of the team as a whole.
- We’ve not recruited anyone from outside the club, bar the new Head Coach Kristian Woolf. Some say our squad is strong enough and there’s no point adding to it for the sake of it, some say standing still is akin to going backwards – what’s your view on us not adding to the first team squad?
Yes I think it is the right move and Saints have demonstrated that they have a squad for the future, with a whole wealth of talent coming through. I think we have a good blend of experience (Coote, Roby, Lomax, Walmsley, Taia) with exceptional young players in the likes of Dodd and Welsby. I’m not concerned and think it keeps the young guys hungry.
- What is the minimum expectation that would make it a successful season overall?
For 2020 to be a successful season I think we need to be in the top 3 of the table, with a win of either the cup or the grand final, or LLS. I think a minimum would be to win 1 piece of silverware again, and more would be successful. I realise its high expectation but I feel we would underachieve if we finished the season empty handed.
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
Unlike previous seasons, I don’t think there’s many players around Super League who stand out as much better than anyone in our team. There’s a couple who I really rate, and would be up to playing for Saints – Liam Watts, Gildart and Hastings. Not because we are weak in them areas, but just sheer quality who wouldn’t look out of place in a Saints squad.
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
I’m most excited about Lewis Dodd, however I am unsure how much we will see him get a chance with Lomax and Fages at the helm. Matty Lees I think we will see much more game time and go from strength to strength.
I have absolutely no problem at all with Toronto entering Super League. They have earned their right to be here. It will be interesting to see how the logistics work, but I am very impressed with their ambition and the way they have gone about their marketing and PR. The reveal of SBW at the Emirates was executed at a higher level than anything previously done in Super League, so in terms of raising the bar, that has to be good for the game. They’re also showing to bring in new higher quality sponsor than you see at some other super league clubs, and possibly their own TV deal on the table, so to me that surely has to be good for the growth of the game. It needs to be managed carefully though and I think this kind of significant change for the game needs strong leadership and administration from the RFL, which I don’t have confidence in.
I would welcome more teams from Europe, i.e. would love to see a strong Toulouse come into Super League. I wouldn’t say no to another Northern America side but I think it should be steady and slowly to see how Toronto do, and so other teams and the RFL can learn from them, and any pitfalls that they will encounter.
Long term I actually think the measure of success for Toronto would be them playing in their own Canadian Super League. I would like to see it as our own European Super League with French, possibly an Irish club. If Toronto achieve their mission to get more rugby balls into kids hands, wouldn’t it be brilliant if that then bred and supported a league in North America. This would then mean that the game would have genuinely grown, and ultimately give more competitive national teams and thus a stronger international game.
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
Don’t like it to be honest. Think it’s a little unfair and would be better if both teams earned 1 point after 80 minutes. Both teams would then play for the golden point, which would be an extra point for the winners.
- Predictions:
Top 5 – Saints, Wigan, Hull, Warrington, Salford
Grand Finalists – Saints, Warrington
Champions – Saints
Challenge Cup Winners – Wigan
Relegated – Hull KR
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
Would like to see Lomax but I think it will be Hastings again.
This is the hardest question of the lot. I think I would go with the Saints 2006 Grand Final team, but theres not much in it for me. I say this because the confidence we had throughout that 2006 season was immense, and although we were good last year, I’m not sure our strike power would match that of 2006. Lyon and Long in particular are probably the reasons that edge it. Jamie Lyon was a real phenomenon for the short period of time he was with us. And although we have a strong half back partnership in Lomax and Fages, there was no touching Sean Long on his day.

- First of all tell us a little about yourself…
Have been watching Saints for over 52 years and I am a pure bred rugby league Saints supporter with a passion for the game in general. I played amateur up to 18 years of age before work and my wife came along but got back into the game via coaching the junior game at Pilks Recs back in the 80’s – did my coaching badges and got noticed by Clive Griffiths who used to play for Saints and did work for the national coaching scheme. I became a regional coach for the coaching scheme teaching people to become coaches in my spare time.
I then got involved up at Saints in the late 1990’s helping manage the academy when Wello, John Stankevitch, Edmo and Tim Jonkers were just starting out. That led to me getting involved with the CIP coaching scheme for junior development when a young James Graham and James Roby started out, moving on to do work with the RFL coaching at National Talent camps. There I ended up working with young players like Kev Sinfield at under 15’s, Danny Brough, Kirk Yeaman to name a few, also did some coaching with the ladies game – coaching a winning Warrington ladies team and also coaching as an assistant coach at England Ladies u21’s. I am now 60 but still do Coach Ed work for the RFL when needed and still love it – but my passion is still Saints and I go to all home matches and some away games when possible – I am just about to start help coach the LDRL team in 2020 as I think this a great initiative.
- Sum up last season (pretty much a blank canvas to give your thoughts. Can include anything: your favourite moment during the season, who you thought was the best player, biggest surprise etc. – whatever you want)
Last season was brilliant – we had a coach in Justin Holbrook who believed in the players, kept it simple and grew the team and added a great blend of youth and experience to it. The team believed in its ethos and bought into it – the best moment apart from winning the hub cap, and of course the Grand Final, was the total destruction of a Wigan in the Semi. That’s the best performance in my opinion – perfect and totally dominating – best player for me Morgan Knowles – the new Chris Joynt – doesn’t say much but his actions do the talking.
No – I think it’s right to put faith in the squad and add in the good up and coming talent from the youth conveyor belt. Let’s not panic buy like other clubs like Wigan, Hull and Leeds to name a few – trust in the process in place – don’t try and fix what isn’t broken
- What is the minimum expectation that would make it a successful season overall?
Finish in the top 2 – win the Challenge cup and be in the GF again – play open expansive rugby but be mean in defence and snuff teams out early doors
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
Stef Ratchford from Warrington – a good balanced and clever rugby player who is underrated by many – I think he would complement our back line in the half backs.
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
Jack Welsby
- We welcome Toronto into Super League for the first time, meaning we now have 2 teams from outside of the UK taking part in Super League.
So in three parts:
What are your thoughts on Toronto’s promotion
Would you welcome more expansion teams from across Europe and/or North America
What would your ideal ‘domestic’ Rugby League competition look like in 20-30 years (e.g. Toronto to still be part of the Super League structure with other expansion teams, all expansion teams to be in their own strong domestic leagues, UK only super League etc.)
I welcome Toronto and think it’s good to expand our great game. I would target another North America team and grow slowly – I have a son who lives out in Washington State (Spokane) he still follows Saints but would love a chance to see teams out there.
I think in the next 20 – 30 years we will still have the odd North American team in SL along with the odd French side. We just need to have visionaries to market our great game better – this is where we fall down as a sport . Look at the NRL in Australia and the NFL – they have got it right – have been to both places and seen it myself, it’s like Premiership football only better all round!
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
I like golden point – it gives a definite result to a game and adds drama and controversy. Teams have to show metal and grind out results and not let it get to that stage – this develops teams’ game awareness more (as with us – never right off the Saints) – fake the 1 point and get the try!
- Predictions:
Top 5 – Saints, Warrington, Wigan, Hull and Leeds
Grand Finalists – Saints v Warrington
Champions – Saints of course!
Challenge Cup Winners – I fancy us to go back and get it right this time against Wigan
Relegated – Salford
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
Lomax if he stays fit and well. I like the system we have now but some of the assessors need changing from the ‘has been’ brigade – needs people with better vision of the modern game and its tactics and styles of play
2006 team – better all-round team with great match winners and great generals in the half backs with Long, Martyn and Sculthorpe, Cunningham and a young James Roby – great forwards and great match wininng backs with Wello at FB – pure brilliance
- Finally, quick fire!, pick your best 17 from these (and no you can’t swap any round, James Roby is exempt because he could be picked twice):

- First of all tell us a little about yourself…
I started watching Saints in 1982, three days before my 6th birthday, when my granddad took me to watch them play the Australian touring side. Despite the 0-32 hammering, I was hooked from that day and went along most Sundays. I got my first season ticket when I was about 10 and have had one ever since. My first memorable away game was Castleford in the ‘John Player Trophy’ in 1986. Saints came back from 0-16 to win 26-22 and the Kevin McCormack try celebration was recreated many times when playing street rugby! I used to go every game home and away and was a regular member of the ‘Funbus’. I met my now wife Kerry on an away trip to London in 2000. These days I choose my away games as juggling family time and finances means it just is not possible for me to go to every game.
- Sum up last season
Last season was fantastic in terms of league achievements: league leaders, record points and onto a Grand Final victory. The only down side being the Challenge Cup final loss, showing that we still can vulnerable in big games. There were so many players who were quality last season and it is difficult to pick a stand out player but Coote adds an extra dimension when he plays and almost acts as a third half back at times. Good to see James Bentley breakthrough also.
- We’ve not recruited anyone from outside the club, bar the new Head Coach Kristian Woolf. Some say our squad is strong enough and there’s no point adding to it for the sake of it, some say standing still is akin to going backwards – what’s your view on us not adding to the first team squad?
There are arguments for both sides on this but I think the squad is good enough personally. We maybe could have gone for another half to replace Richardson but would with Fages and Lomax playing so well together they possibly would not get a chance. The coaches obviously like the look of Lewis Dodd as a backup. Our forwards look strong enough and we have some good depth there.
- What is the minimum expectation that would make it a successful season overall?
The minimum expectation has to be a major trophy again this season, either the Challenge Cup or Grand Final (I would like both because I am greedy). We set the standard high last season and need to back that up to be considered a truly great side.
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
Stefan Ratchford – a quality player who can play in a few different positions.
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
As previously mentioned I think James Bentley can make an impact this season he has something about him. I am also looking forward to seeing more of Joe Batchelor.
- We welcome Toronto into Super League for the first time, meaning we now have 2 teams from outside of the UK taking part in Super League.
So in three parts:
What are your thoughts on Toronto’s promotion

What would your ideal ‘domestic’ Rugby League competition look like in 20-30 years (e.g. Toronto to still be part of the Super League structure with other expansion teams, all expansion teams to be in their own strong domestic leagues, UK only super League etc.)
I am not bothered in the slightest by Toronto’s promotion; expansion is good for the game as long as we do not neglect existing teams.
I would welcome other expansion teams as long as they were funded correctly and had a good long-term business plan.
My ideal domestic game would be a mix of current teams and expansion in a bigger league so we can scrap these awful loop fixtures. If Toronto’s emergence catches on in North America, they could possibly have their own league over there who knows.
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
I think we should have a golden try system, two 5-minute periods and if no one scores then it is a draw. The current golden point system annoys me as it turns into a ‘dropgoalathon’ rather than teams still playing rugby.
- Predictions:
Top 5 – Saints, Warrington, Wigan, Castleford, Hull FC
Grand Finalists – Saints & Wigan
Champions – Saints
Challenge Cup Winners – Hull FC
Relegated – Hull KR (sorry Rovers fans)
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
I do not mind the current Man of Steel system it seems fairer than it used to be. Blake Austin looks the favourite I would have a few quid on Luke Gale as a slightly outside bet though.
That would be a great game; I think the 2006 team would just edge it, as they were very slightly better defensively for me.

- First of all tell us a little about yourself
I’m 22 and have been a Saints season ticket holder since 2004, despite living in Birmingham my whole life! My dad grew up in St Helens, so Rugby League has always been a big part of our family, and I caught the RL bug from a very young age… much to the annoyance of my Brummie mates.
I attend pretty much every home game. Distance makes away games a little more difficult, but I generally get to 3 or 4 away days every season.
- Sum up last season
Relief! I was very sceptical this team could perform in the big games, especially after what happened in the Challenge Cup semi-final and final. But I was more than happy to be proven wrong in the play-offs.
The Grand Final was an obvious highlight, but convincingly beating Wigan four times in one year is also up there – the atmosphere on Good Friday was one of the best I’ve seen. It’s a season that’ll definitely live long in the memory for many reasons.
I’m happy with the same squad. When you consider we’re probably spending up to the salary cap already, who could we have realistically signed, that would significantly improve the squad, without taking us over the cap? I think a new coach will be a big enough change to keep things fresh for this season.
- What is the minimum expectation that would make it a successful season overall?
At least one final appearance should be our minimum expectation every year; so I’d accept that, plus maintaining our play offs record. But if we really want to capitalise on last season’s success, we should be backing it up with more trophies in 2020.
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
Jackson Hastings. A genuine scrum half with a great kicking game would be an improvement over what we currently have. I like Theo Fages, but Hastings would take us to the next level. Honourable mentions to James Maloney and Aidan Sezer.
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
Jack Welsby is the obvious choice. He was very impressive in a few games last year; and the fact he’s still 18 shows how much potential he has. We do seem a bit light on numbers in the backs, so Lewis Dodd and Josh Simm could both have big years as well.
They won the Championship fair and square so I have no issues with them at all. They’ll provide something a little different too.
Yes, but only one or two more. Super League is a fantastic way for these ambitious teams to generate public and media interest in their respective regions and I’m fully supportive of that. However, it’s only a short-term solution. If they’re in Super League too long, then the game isn’t growing in these new areas fast enough and I don’t think this competition can sustain a large number international teams long term. There must be a long-term goal for these expansion teams to eventually leave the Super League and join their own domestic leagues.
In 20 years from now, if Toronto, New York, etc., are thriving in their own domestic leagues, then I think we have been successful. As I’ve mentioned above, Super League will be great for creating the initial interest in the sport, to allow that to happen. From a UK-only perspective, I’d love to see the likes of York City Knights and Newcastle Thunder competing with new ‘big city’ teams like Birmingham (obviously), Edinburgh or Bristol. Combine these, with the likes of Saints, Wigan, Leeds and Hull, and you’ve got a VERY marketable product. We can’t stick to the M62 corridor forever. If those two things happen, UK Rugby League will be a lot stronger and the international appeal of the game will be too.
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
I like the suggestion where both teams are awarded a point each if the game ends a draw – but the winner of golden point receives a second point. I do get annoyed when we tinker with the rules or format almost every year; so I’d rather we kept things as they are for a while.
- Predictions:
Top 5 – Saints, Wigan, Wire, Hull, Castleford
Grand Finalists – Saints & Warrington
Champions – Saints…hopefully!
Challenge Cup Winners – Hull
Relegated – Hull KR
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
Luke Thompson could be a good shout.
It’s a pretty fair system overall, and I think it produced the right result last year. The only issue is some of the panel’s selections for certain games were incredible. Apply a bit more common sense and it would be fine. You’ll never have a system that pleases everyone though.
Our side from 2006 had more talented individuals, but modern-day players are fitter and more disciplined than their counterparts from 10-15yrs ago. For that reason, I’d say the 2019 would probably win. It would be one hell of a match though!

- First of all tell us a little about yourself
I started following Saints in 1996 taken by my Mum and Dad. I don’t manage to attend all games due to work or family commitments but when I can I go to both the home and away games.
- Sum up last season
The season was just about one thing and that was winning Super League. It was a brilliant achievement to go the entire league season only losing 3 games, but for me It didn’t matter how many games we won or lost because we’d proven the year before, it’s how you perform at the end of the season that counts – and this year we were ruthless when it came to the business end. Losing in the Challenge Cup final to Warrington was a blow, but thankfully it didn’t derail the season and we managed to win the one that matters.
To be honest, with the team we have from last season, I imagine we would be pretty close to the salary cap. A few players have left but they wouldn’t have been big earners, therefore leaving us enough to make a signing which would add to an already quality squad. I think any salary cap remaining we have should be used to tie down the best forward in the competition to a long term deal.
- What is the minimum expectation that would make it a successful season overall?
It has to be a trophy. Woolf has taken over a team that has just won the league with a record points tally and then lifted the Super League trophy. That monkey that we fell at the last stage is off our backs now and hopefully we can crack on to have a few dominant seasons like Leeds did. Anything other than a trophy next season would be disappointing.
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
Looking at the team realistically and thinking long term it would be Daryl Clark. I believe he’s the only hooker who can even get close to the standards that James Roby has set at Saints. I’m a huge fan of Roby but with him coming towards the end of his career Clark would be a great replacement.
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
I expect James Bentley to get more game time this year with his versatility meaning he can cover a number of positions which is always a big plus for any coach. He’s had a few years at Saints now, so it’s really time for him to kick on showing why he won the young player of the year in the Championship a few years ago.
I have absolutely no problem with Toronto. A lot of fans do but I have no problem with the RFL trying things to potentially grow the game. They bring in a higher attendance than half of the Super League clubs so good luck to them!
I would welcome it if it can prove that it’s working and expanding the game but any other teams must start from the bottom and climb up the ladder the same way that Toronto did.
My ideal ‘domestic’ rugby league competition would be a league with ‘domestic’ teams which has helped to grow rugby league in other countries. If Catalan and Toronto had left the Super League to be in their own countries league then that would prove that the RFL where right to include them in the Super League.
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
I liked it, it brings excitement to games and that’s what we want isn’t it?
- Predictions:
Top 5 – Saints, Wigan, Warrington, Castleford, Hull
Grand Finalists – Saints, Wigan
Champions – Saints
Challenge Cup Winners – Wigan
Relegated – Hull KR
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
Jonny Lomax. I liked the idea of it but I wasn’t sure by the end of the year. Jonny Lomax was clearly in the top few players last season, but didn’t get into the top 5 finalists. Towards the end of the season all the commentators started picking up on how good he has been and I think under the old system he would have got it. For me it should be decided at the end of the season, like it always had been.
I think the 2006 team would have won. It’s a tough decision but I think the standard was better in 2006 than it is now. I believe the 2006 team under achieved though so hopefully if you ask me this again in a few years’ time I’ll be saying the 2019 team instead.

- First of all tell us a little about yourself…
First game in 1979 whilst still at school. Started to go regularly when moved to Birmingham when Superleague started. Season ticket holder since 1999. Usually found near a bar enjoying a good away day
- Sum up last season
2019 we achieved what we should have done in 2018 by bringing the Superleague back home. Pity about the Challenge Cup.
Best moment of 2019 was the complete and utter demolition of the Pie Eaters in the semi final – as complete a performance as I’ve seen. Thompson was superb all year ably assisted by the returning Walmsley. Coote was a revelation at Full Back. Matty Lees a deserved winner of Young Player of the Year – great to have him back raring to go in 2020. Going to miss London away in 2020.
Not too concerned that we have not added to the squad from 2019 as most were already contracted for 2020 anyhow and with some players probably on increased contracts I’d suggest there is not a lot of room under the cap for any additions. Players like Bentley, Batchelor, Costello may get more game time this year
- What is the minimum expectation that would make it a successful season overall?
With the quality of the squad we have a successful season would be lifting the Challenge Cup or retaining Super League trophy – certainly finishing top 2 – but continue to be playing open exciting rugby
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
Jackson Hastings – can’t believe we didn’t try and get him as I think he would improve us
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
Aaron Smith will cement his growing reputation as Robes’ eventual successor. Bentley to have more game time. Looking forward to seeing Lewis Dodd play if given a chance
- We welcome Toronto into Super League for the first time, meaning we now have 2 teams from outside of the UK taking part in Super League.
So in three parts:

What would your ideal ‘domestic’ Rugby League competition look like in 20-30 years (e.g. Toronto to still be part of the Super League structure with other expansion teams, all expansion teams to be in their own strong domestic leagues, UK only super League etc.)
Promotion earned on merit – however a few McDermott moans appearing about Salary cap etc. They knew the rules when entering the competition
Yes – have to be viable though. Crusaders an example of a failed expansion
Would like to see a strong 14 team Super League. Not sure a few more ‘Torontos’ would be good for the game in Europe. Maybe a North American Super League may emerge
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
Would like to see 1 point each for the drawn game and an extra point for Golden Point. Some games decided without 1 team having a possession
- Predictions:
Top 5 – Saints, Wigan, Warrington, Hull, Leeds
Grand Finalists – Saints, Wigan
Champions – Saints (still not Wires year)
Challenge Cup Winners – Saints (why not the double)
Relegated – Hull KR
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
James Maloney will go close. Not sure current voting system necessarily rewards the best players. Current system means a standout player in a so called lesser team may pick up regular points whilst someone like Johnny Lomax who had an outstanding season but didn’t make the final shortlist – victim of playing in a team of many talents. Having said that Hastings was a deserved winner and I believe would have won it under the previous system. There were some strange choices in games last year by so called experts!!
Draw and no golden point. Winners to be decided by Rock Paper Scissors. 2006 team wonderful in attack but 2019 better defensively.

- First of all tell us a little about yourself
Ste Smith, referred to by nickname usually and have watched Saints for 30 odd years since early 80’s. Seen games all over the world from Cronulla to friendlies in Dublin. Will discuss the game at any level and has yet to be wrong about anything except my results predictions.
- Sum up last season
Key moment was Theo over Danny Richardson. Emphasis clearly leaning towards a watertight defence. Correct decision by Justin. Recruiting Coote and Fiji Kev was outstanding and the team rolled on from game 1.
- We’ve not recruited anyone from outside the club, bar the new Head Coach Kristian Woolf. Some say our squad is strong enough and there’s no point adding to it for the sake of it, some say standing still is akin to going backwards – what’s your view on us not adding to the first team squad?
Correct not adding for the sake of it. Players being out of contract this season means the recruitment or re-signing at seasons end this time are key. Amor, Taia, Thompson need to be sorted ASAP.
- What is the minimum expectation that would make it a successful season overall?
Minimum expectation would be for a top 2 finish with hopefully at least one trophy. If we put ourselves in a position where it’s one off games for a trophy then I’ll take that all day long. Last year was a freak of a season and we’ll need to be prepared to have a few more losses along the way.
- If money and salary cap were no object, which one player would you bring to Saints from another Super League team – and why?
Currie – great second rower who offers cover at centre which would piss off the Wire fans. If John is going then I’d go for Ben.
- Which of the young players or non-regular first team squad members do you think is most likely to make a name for themselves this season?
Welsby, Smith will play more and I like Rizzelli from limited viewings
- We welcome Toronto into Super League for the first time, meaning we now have 2 teams from outside of the UK taking part in Super League.
So in three parts:
What are your thoughts on Toronto’s promotion
Would you welcome more expansion teams from across Europe and/or North America
What would your ideal ‘domestic’ Rugby League competition look like in 20-30 years (e.g. Toronto to still be part of the Super League structure with other expansion teams, all expansion teams to be in their own strong domestic leagues, UK only super League etc.)
Earned it on the field. Well deserved.
Yes, as long as they start in lowest division and earn the right to compete higher.
Domestic leagues to be strong in North America / Canada and expanded in France. London to be in SL and competitive.
- Golden point was used in Super League last year – what are your thoughts on the system?
Use it but give 1 point for losing team, 2 points for GP winners.
- Predictions:
Top 5 – Saints, Wire, Wigan, Castleford, Hull
Grand Finalists – Saints v Wire
Champions – Saints
Challenge Cup Winners – Saints
Relegated – Hull KR
- Who will be Man of Steel? Do you agree with the way the votes are given out?
Jackson Hastings. No.
2006, They had a better pack and a genius at 7.
- Finally, quick fire!, pick your best 17 from these (and no you can’t swap any round, James Roby is exempt because he could be picked twice):
