This season we’ll be running a weekly betting column on the website, as we attempt to help you beat the bookies! It’d be quite simple to just pick the outright winners in games, so we’re going to make it a bit harder by tipping with the Handicaps!

We’ll keep a track record of our picks – so we can see how we’ve done over the course of the season – think you can do better? Let us know who’ve you’ve got on the forum!

Thursday

St Helens -4 v Leeds Rhinos

Having undergone a spectacular fall from grace in 2016, Leeds will be looking to get back on the horse early on, but a trip to Saints for the season opener hopefully won’t be it. The bookies aren’t taking any chances with the handicap, and it may have been bigger if Matty Smith wasn’t injured. Still we fancy Saints to cover by at least a converted try.

Pick: St Helens -4

Friday

Castleford -12 v Leigh

I expect big things from Castleford this season, and they couldn’t have wished for a better opener than a home game against newly promoted Leigh. Really impressive in the friendly v Saints, I quite fancy them to win big.

Pick: Castleford -12

Widnes v Huddersfield -2

The bookies are being careful on this making Huddersfield slight favourites. Widnes have lost Kevin Brown to Warrington, and I expect them to hovering at the bottom of the table this year. Huddersfield in comparison will be looking to bounce back after a terrible 2015, and should get off to a flyer with a big win here.

Pick: Huddersfield -2

Saturday

Salford +8 v Wigan

Wigan struggled on the road during 2016, and Salford will be looking for a big early season performance to show they are able to compete. I expect a Wigan victory, but I think It’ll be closer than the 8 point margin quoted. Take the Red Devils with the start.

Pick: Salford +8

Catalans +2 v Warrington

A game that is too tight to call, which means we’ll take Catalans homefield advantage as the deciding factor. Both sides will be fielding new half back combinations, and this game could well come down to who wins the duel between Luke Walsh and Kevin Brown in the kicking game.

Pick: Catalans +2

Sunday

Wakefield +6 v Hull FC

Wakefield did really well to make the top 8 in 2016, and have recruited well during the off season. With the recruitment of Sam Williams from Canberra to play in the halves, I expect this to be a close game. Hull may escape with the win, but we’ll take Wakefield with the start!

Pick: Wakefield +6
