Last Time Around – Leigh Centurions (A)

You have to go all the way back to September 2005 for Saints last Super League visit to Leigh, with the Centurions still resident at the now demolished Hilton Park, in front of a crowd of 5534. Those Saints fans there to see it were in for a treat, as Saints racked up the points as they recorded their biggest ever Super League win in a 78-4 rout of the Centurions, who were enjoying (or not) their only previous season in Super League.

It was a one sided display from Daniel Anderson’s side, with Sean Long and Mike Bennett crossing over for tries in the opening five minutes. Paul Wellens and current Leigh captain Mickey Higham would inflict further misery on the home team, as Saints headed in 32-0 up at the break.

Saints ran rampant in the second half, with Long scoring his second, and further tries coming  from Darren Albert, Paul Anderson (2), Ade Gardner (2), Kieron Cunningham, James Graham and Maurice Fa’asavalu – but the icing on the cake and game highlight for the Saints was James Roby’s spectacular 70 metre effort shortly after half time.

“It’s just like watching Brazil” was the ditty that reigned down from the terraces, in a victory and scoreline that is likely to remain as Saints Super League record victory for many years to come!
